The implementation of the idea to unit teaching, research and medical care under one roof is unique in Germany. Since purchase of the clinical complex in the year 1984 almost all institutions of the Faculty of Medicine find here their place. That means clinic, theoretical and clinical-theoretical institutes, research establishments, lecture rooms, schools for specialised occupations of the health service and public utilities like pharmacy, kitchen, laundry, central sterilisation, archive and stock. Approximately 5.500 employees work in the University Hospital Aachen. Annually approximately 48.000 in-house patient and 111.000 outhouse patient are treated in this hospital.

Operation department
The central operation departments has a complement 30 operating theatres, together with a separate room for up to 10 patients coming out of anaesthetic. The University Hospital Aachen has an outpatient operation centre.

Outpatient treatment
All specialist clinics have their own outpatient departments, each with its own reception area.

Services building
The laundry, the kitchens (including dietary kitchen), the patient record departments, the central sterilizing facilities, the stores, the pharmacy, the waste disposal centre and the technical centre are housed in a service wing. Supplies are brought into the clinics and institutes of the UKA via an automatic transportation system.

Teaching, research and training
For medical and dental students, in-service doctors, and general trainees, optimum training facilities are available at University Hospital Aachen. The UKA is made up of 34 clinical departments and 23 theoretical and clinical institutes. Some 2.700 students of medicine and dentistry are studying at the Medical Faculty of Aachen University of Technology (RWTH). On Floor E, there are six lecture theatres, two of them seating 312, the others seating 160 each. The lecture theatres are equipped with modern media technology. The Audiovisual Media Centre has facilities for live broadcasts - for instance, with direct transmission from operating theatre to lecture theatre. The students´ classrooms are available for conducting laboratory experiments. They are tailor-made for micro-teaching. The University Hospital Aachen lecture theatres are also used for conferences and congresses.
The schools for the health-care professions are located very close to the student facilities. A total of some 375 pupils can be trained in these schools at any one time - specifically, general nursing 150, children´s nursing 45, physiotherapy 80, medical-technical laboratory assistants 16, and speech therapy 60.

Finding your way around
Access to all sections of the Hospital is through the main entrance hall. Here you will find the information desk, the outpatient operation centre, the branch offices of medical insurance companies, a bank, and various shops; on the second floor ist the cashier´s office. You will find the the restaurant at the ground floor between the elevators B1 and B2. The reception areas providing patient and visitor information for the individual sections, located on Floors 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9, are all within easy reach of the "B" lifts.
