Since 1997 Professor Pallua has been in charge of the department of plastic surgery, hand and burns surgery. His studies of human medicine and his specialist training for plastic surgery (with additional title hand surgery) then led the Italian-born first to Vienna, and then to Berlin and to the Medical University of Hanover where he worked as an assistant medical director.

The department for plastic surgery is the only department of its type in Germany certified by the European Board of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (EBOPRAS). It is internationally known among other things for its specifically developed surgical method for facial reconstruction.As a highlight, patients can witness the planning of their surgery by means of digital photography via imaging on the computer.
