With establishment of the Faculty of Medicine at the 18th of June 1966 the municipal hospital at that time ascended into the rank of an University Hospital. Fast it became clear that space scarceness and a rapidly rising number of patient required a new building. After a construction period of over 10 years it could be started with the section-wise purchase of the new faculty building in 1982.

The solemn inauguration took place the 21st of march 1985. Due to its size and the associated costs the building caused initial caution. In the meantime it is noticed that top efficiency medicine is offered to the patient. Fortunately this estimate is divided also by patient, the population, the co-operating established physicians and the assigning hospitals of the region. In addition, far beyond national borders, the University Hospital enjoys an excellent reputation. It combines in its singularity all mechanisms of supplying the patient, the entire medical faculty and the dentistry under one roof. In this enormous building is also place for the common research of engineers, scientists and physicians. At the moment 59 professors, 824 scientific assistants and 4347 non-scientific employees in 33 clinical departments, 21 institutes and in the administration of the University Hospital co-operate.

Building and architecture

The implementation of the idea to unit teaching, research and medical care under one roof is unique in Germany. Since purchase of the clinical complex in the year 1984 almost all institutions of the Faculty of Medicine find here their place. That means clinic, theoretical and clinical-theoretical institutes, research establishments, lecture rooms, schools for specialised occupations of the health service and public utilities like pharmacy, kitchen, laundry, central sterilisation, archive and stock. Approximately 5.500 employees work in the University Hospital Aachen. Annually approximately 48.000 in-house patient and 111.000 outhouse patient are treated in this hospital.

12 partly planted inner courts, some of it as roof gardens, loosen up the structure of the house and separate at the same time the individual ranges and bring daylight into the areas inside. The University Hospital contains more than 6.600 rooms.
