International Research Training Group "The Neuroscience of Modulating Aggression and Impulsivity in Psychopathology" (IRTG 2150)

The Department for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics and one of the leading American universities, the University of Pennsylvania (PENN) brings together students from a variety of disciplines within the International Research Training Group “The Neuroscience of Modulating Aggression and Impulsivity in Psychopathology”. The aim of this project is to gain knowledge about how different factors such as environment, traumatic experiences, personality, gender, culture and genetic factors influence aggressive and impulsive behavior in humans. Modern imaging techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging, positron emission tomography or electroencephalography are applied to investigate the neural networks and the transport of certain chemicals in the brain, which are responsible for impulsive or aggressive behavior. IRTG students also have the opportunity to conduct research at the partner university.

The project is funded since April 2016 for the next four and a half years by the German Research Foundation (DFG; IRTG spokespersons are: Prof. Dr. Ute Habel, RWTH Aachen, and Prof. Dr. Ruben C. Gur, University of Pennsylvania). It succeeds the International Research Training Group "Schizophrenia and Autism" (IRTG 1328), which was funded by the DFG from 2006 to 2016 (PI: Prof. Frank Schneider).
