About us

"Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do."

- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe -

The surgical discipline of urology is relatively young, having emerged at the beginning of the last century. It deals with diseases of the kidney, the urinary tract, and the male genitalia. Our unit comprises 16 doctors and over 30 nurses. We focus on the treatment of urological cancer, including prostate, renal, bladder, testicular, and penile cancer.

We have recently established our cutting-edge Programme for Robotic (da Vinci) Urological Surgery led by Dr. Christian Bach, and introduced techniques for MRI-guided digital fusion biopsy of the prostate to detect prostate cancer. These measures form the cornerstone of our mission to remain a pioneer and leader in the rapidly changing era of digital and technology-based healthcare.

Our multi-disciplinary, team-based approach to patient care follows the principles of translational medicine, combining expertise across the fields of radiology, oncology, pathology, nuclear medicine, palliative medicine, and radiation therapy. We hold regular interdisciplinary meetings in which we discuss the case of each patient in detail, ensuring an individualized treatment strategy.

A second focus of the urology department is modern, minimally invasive treatment of stones in the kidneys, ureter, and bladder. We use the latest laser and shock-wave technology, performing keyhole surgery with miniaturized instruments (Mini-PCNL), replacing the need for open and invasive stone surgery.

We work closely with our colleagues across several departments, offering our specialized expertise in a variety of fields. Under the guidance of Prof. Dorothea Rohrmann, our Section for Pediatric Urology works closely with the Pediatric Department to treat a wide range of pediatric urological diseases according to the highest standards. Together with the Department of Reproductive Medicine and Gynecology, we assist couples who are seeking fertility treatment. Furthermore, our regional Continence Centre addresses continence disorders in both genders.

As part of a world-class research university, our unit participates actively in scientific medical research. We are developing innovative imaging techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of prostate and bladder cancer. We are also creating new technologies for stone treatment, to further advance the field.

On behalf of every employee in our Urology Department, we pledge to provide the highest-quality urological care at all times, and to place the wellbeing of each individual patient at the heart of our services.

Best regards,

Prof. Dr. med. Thomas-Alexander Vögeli

Director of the Urology Department
