Tobias Hafner, MD, doctoral student at the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, has been awarded the Doctoral Prize of the Medical Faculty

As a doctoral student of the "M&M – Machine Learning and Musculoskeletal Imaging" group of the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, Tobias Hafner, MD, has been awarded the prestigious Therapeutic Doctoral Prize for outstanding scientific achievements, endowed with € 1,500 and donated by the Board of the RWTH Aachen University Hospital. His doctoral studies were completed under the supervision of group leader Sven Nebelung, MD, PhD (Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology) in 2021 and investigated human cartilage functionality using quantitative MRI techniques and a secondary osteoarthritis model. Tobias published his results in well-known and influential scientific journals and may facilitate, in the future, to detect early wear-and-tear of the joint, especially of the articular cartilage, using advanced imaging techniques, so that new therapies for cartilage regeneration can be applied earlier and in a more targeted manner. 

In his acceptance speech, Tobias addressed special thanks to the department, the group as well as his supervisor and thanked them for their active support and trustful cooperation. The award ceremony took place at the annual Medical Ball in Aachen on May 7th, 2022.

Dr. med. Tobias Hafner, Doktorand der Klinik für Diagnostische und Interventionelle Radiologie, mit dem Promotionspreis der medizinischen Fakultät ausgezeichnet

Als Mitglied der Arbeitsgruppe „M&M – Machine Learning and Musculoskeletal Imaging“ der Klinik für Diagnostische und Interventionelle Radiologie wurde Doktorand Tobias Hafner mit dem renommierten therapeutischen Promotionspreis für herausragende wissenschaftliche Leistungen, dotiert mit 1.500 Euro und gestiftet vom Vorstand der Uniklinik RWTH Aachen, ausgezeichnet. Seine im Jahr 2021 abgeschlossene Promotion trägt den Titel „Bildgebende Untersuchung der Funktionalität humanen Knorpelgewebes durch quantitative MR-Techniken in einem sekundären Arthrosemodell“ und wurde unter der Leitung von Arbeitsgruppenleiter PD Dr. med. Sven Nebelung (Klinik für Diagnostische und Interventionelle Radiologie) angefertigt. Die gewonnenen Erkenntnisse können in Zukunft helfen, frühen Verschleiß des Gelenks, insbesondere des Gelenkknorpels, durch Bildgebung zu erkennen, sodass neue Therapien der Knorpelregeneration früher und zielgerichteter zum Einsatz kommen können.

In seiner Dankesrede richtete Dr. Hafner einen besonderen Dank an die Klinik, die Arbeitsgruppe sowie seinen Doktorvater und bedankte sich für die tatkräftige Unterstützung und die vertrauensvolle Zusammenarbeit. Die Verleihung fand auf dem jährlichen Medizinerball am 07.05.2022 statt.
