The IZDM is pacesetter and initiator of the interdisciplinary development of digital medicine in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germanyand Europe. Wide-ranging collaborations and an excellent network of national and international institutions and clinics are the success factors of our work. The IZDM team skillfully combines a broad range of expertise from the university hospital with the competencies of the partner institutions. Networking that works.

Our vision: Creating synergies
Our research location in Aachen is unique. It is mainly characterized by the network of key players: University Medicine, Technical University, Computational Biosciences (Systems Medicine), Engineering Sciences, Medical Informatics, Experts for Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Reality in Healthcare. Our proximity to the three-country (triangle or point) is ideal for cross-border cooperation. Numerous international publications and collaborations benefit both healthcare professionals and patients.
Smart Health Living Lab
Innovative ideas are made tangible in a Living Lab and tested and applied in a real environment. We are using our Living Lab as a user-driven, open innovation ecosystem based on a partnership between science, companies, citizens and government. This setting enables users to actively participate in research, development and innovation processes using various qualitative and quantitative research methods.
New building 2. BA Cluster Biomedical Engineering
The new building complex for the Cluster Biomedical Engineering has been in operation since the end of 2025, located in the immediate vicinity of the university hospital. Modern premises covering around 8,600 square meters are available for the vocational and educational academy and for the Innovation Center for Digital Medicine (IZDM) at the University Hospital RWTH Aachen. The IZDM facilities offer optimal conditions for interdisciplinary research and application-oriented innovations in the field of digital medicine.
