Alpha1-Antitrypsin deficiency- European Reference Network
Dear Patients,
As European Reference Network for AAT deficiency we want to provide you with comprehensive and specialised care for liver involvement associated with this disease.
We are part of the Department of Gastroenterology, Metabolic Diseases and Medical Intensive Care (Medical Dept III) of the University Hospital RWTH Aachen and are also affiliated with the Center for Rare Diseases located at the same University Hospital. Because of that, we are responsible for the care of patients with rare liver diseases and are particularly specialised in alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency. We are carrying out intensive research into this liver disorder and have been chosen as the coordinating center for AAT deficiency by the European liver association (EASL). We also coordinate the care of patients with AAT-deficiency within the European Reference Network that was initiated by the European commission (ERN Rare-Liver). We are collaborating with various patient organisations throughout Europe and departments of pulmonary medicine that also focus on alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency.
With kind regards
Pavel Strnad, MD, PhD – Lead Consultant of Alpha1-Liver Network and Scientific Advisor of the patient advocacy group Alpha1-Deutschland e.V.
Karim Hamesch, MD – Coordinating Study Physician
