Welcome to the website of the Institute of Medical Psychology and Medical Sociology at Uniklinik RWTH Aachen.
Our institute brings together perspectives from medical psychology, the social sciences, and neuroscience to study health, illness, and healthcare. Under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Kerstin Konrad, our main areas of research include the familial transmission of psychopathology, social interaction processes in dyads and groups, pediatric psychology, and clinical neuropsychology.
We investigate how mental health and mental disorders emerge through the interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors, and how these insights can be translated into prevention, diagnostics, treatment, and teaching. Our methodological approach combines psychological and neuropsychological assessment, experimental paradigms, behavioral and interaction analyses, psychophysiological measurements, and advanced neuroscientific methods such as fNIRS, EEG hyperscanning, and MRI.
The institute’s research is embedded in national and international collaborative networks, including the Collaborative Research Centers and Transregional Collaborative Research Centers TRR 379 “Neuropsychobiology of aggression” and CRC 1451 “Motor Control in Health and Disease.”
A particularly close translational partnership exists with Forschungszentrum Jülich, where Univ.-Prof. Dr. Kerstin Konrad serves as Director at the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine, INM-10, Institute for Translational Neuroscience.
