The Department of Orthodontics sees itself as a prevention-oriented research center that focuses on the scientific advancement of stable and low-risk treatment processes. Our work addresses key determinants of long-term treatment outcomes and investigates clinically relevant interfaces between oral and systemic health.

One focus is on the evidence base of retention protocols and the identification of biological and functional stability factors. To this end, we analyze patient-specific initial parameters—in particular functional deviations—and their prognostic significance in the context of personalized orthodontics.

Of particular relevance is the topic of organ crosstalk, in which we investigate the bidirectional interactions between the oral cavity and the entire organism. The focus is on oral markers, inflammatory profiles, and microbiological signatures that allow conclusions to be drawn about systemic disease risks and have potential preventive and diagnostic significance.

Further research activities concern lingual techniques, whose biomechanical properties and clinical efficiency we evaluate under controlled conditions, as well as the development of objective quality criteria for orthodontic treatment processes.
