The Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 1739 brings together researchers from dentistry, human medicine, and the basic sciences to investigate the effects of systemic diseases on periodontal remodeling.

The central question is how diseases of various organ systems influence the biological processes responsible for the maintenance, adaptation, and regeneration of the periodontium. Despite significant advances in oral hygiene and dental care, periodontal diseases continue to increase worldwide. At the same time, the prevalence of chronic diseases such as kidney, cardiovascular, and liver diseases is rising. A growing body of scientific evidence suggests that these two trends are closely linked.

SFB1739 investigates the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying these interactions. The goal is to identify the previously largely unknown signaling pathways between systemic diseases and the periodontium and, in the long term, to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

The consortium comprises 17 scientific subprojects as well as several service and infrastructure projects. The research is organized into two closely interconnected research areas: the area “Influence of Systemic Diseases on Periodontal Remodeling” (SD) and the area “Pathophysiology of Periodontal Remodeling” (PR).
