UniStem Day 2026 – Experiencing Stem Cell Research Firsthand

On March 20, 2026, the Institute for Cell and Tumor Biology at Uniklinik RWTH Aachen once again took part in the UniStem Day — a Europe-wide educational event dedicated to inspiring high school students for the world of stem cell research.

Organized by Prof. Wolfgang Wagner (Professor of Stem Cell Biology, RWTH Aachen), around 80 high school students from the region had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of research for a day. A total of seven institutes at the University Hospital as well as a group from the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology contributed to the event — a testament to the vibrant scientific community at the Aachen campus.

Our institute welcomed the students together with Niclas Flosdorf and Paul Wanek. The visit centered on the fundamentals of stem cell biology and the questions that drive our everyday research. A particular highlight was the hands-on experience at the microscope: students had the chance to explore fascinating blood cell preparations themselves, bringing science to life well beyond the textbook.

The enthusiasm of our young visitors was palpable — and served as a wonderful reminder of how rewarding it is to make research tangible and to inspire the next generation of scientists.

We would like to thank everyone involved for making this such an engaging and memorable day.
