Summer School Day Program

The Summer School Day will cover one day of two tutorials, a technical tour, discussions, and plenty of networking time on June 11th starting from 9:00 am until 18:00.

We will start with a registration and mingling phase in the morning, in which we encourage attendees to get to know each other informally. To promote networking during the Summer School Day, there will be coffee breaks and a lunch break as well as a dinner in the evening after the opening drinks event. The Summer School Day will be hosted in the UKA and the E.ON Energy Research Center. During the lunch break, the attendees will walk from one location to the other and get a guided technical tour of Campus Melaten.

After the Summer School Day, attendees are invited to join the Healthy Buildings 2023 Europe Conference opening ceremony at the Super C. Subsequently, attendees are invited for an informal get-together in a restaurant in Aachen’s beautiful city center and meet other students of the HB23 Europe conference. Prof. Dr. Martin Baumann works as teacher and trainer for medical engineering and didactics at the RWTH Aachen University. He graduated in Electric Engineering, did his Ph.D. in Biology, qualified as a university lecturer in Human Physiology, and received a master’s degree in Medical Education. He published works on erythrocyte mechanics, medical nanotechnology, and university didactics and authored two books on teamworking and moderation techniques.

Workshop 1: Scientific collaboration

I told you a thousand times! Why didn’t you listen to me?

Ever been annoyed that some speakers, group leaders or colleagues just can't explain things in an understandable way? Or perhaps even cursed yourself because some of your dear colleagues simply do not (want to) understand the explanations you have given them in such detail? Why is it that information passed on orally does often not result in the intended goals?

This is not only annoying, it can become really expensive or even dangerous. But who is to blame: the person who may have explained it inadequately or the person who does not implement the given information adequately? Or both?

This workshop will take a close look at some explanation scenarios in order to deal constructively with the question on how a good explanation can take place. We will identify relevant criteria that ensure that an explanation has the intended effect in the sense of the explainer. And in order to maintain the workshop character, there will be only little explanation (!), and a focus on training and practicing.

Workshop 2: Scientific communication

Giving a talk is sometimes (not so) easy.

Perhaps you already have experienced the following scenario by yourself: Standing in front of an unknown audience is sometimes challenging. Even when you practised your words at least a hundred times, Powerpoint works at its best, and your mentor signals dozens of thumbs up: One demanding glance from that guy with the scary eyes in the third row makes you forget anything you wanted to say and makes your knees tremble.

In this workshop, we will take some time to find out what may cause these uncomfortable feelings and will together collect some useful hints and background in order to cope with it. We will observe, discuss, and reason on habits, idioms, and moves that can support you when giving your next talks. There is no preparation necessary in order to participate but an open mindset.
