Kick-off for the European Research Project MiNE on Endometriosis and Migraine

Researchers at the Institute of Neurophysiology at Uniklinik RWTH Aachen are coordinating an international research project investigating the link between endometriosis and migraine: two common conditions that often occur together. The MiNE (Migraine Neuro-immune interactions Endometriosis) research consortium, funded by the EU’s ERA-NET NEURON program, is investigating how hormonal fluctuations and inflammatory cells in both conditions can sensitize neurons in such a way that the well-known severe pain can occur.

Coordinated by Prof. Dr. med. Angelika Lampert, research groups in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Canada, Romania, and Croatia are investigating possible shared biological mechanisms underlying endometriosis and migraine. Although the two conditions affect different organ systems, they may involve similar processes in pain development. The goal of the project is to gain deeper insight into these shared features and develop new therapeutic approaches for the chronic pain associated with these conditions.

A successful kick-off meeting in early July at the Croatian project partners’ site in Zagreb marked the official launch of the European research project. During the meeting, the participating scientists, together with patients, laid the foundation for future collaboration.

Through close collaboration between basic and clinical research within MiNE, the long-term goal is to develop new therapeutic strategies for people with endometriosis and migraine.
