We are a team of young researchers aiming to understand how kidney diseases develop and how we could diagnose and treat them by using a broad array of approaches and methodologies, e.g. including non-invasive molecular imaging or AI-augmented diagnostics.

The main focus of our laboratory is on chronic kidney disease (CKD), the common end-point of virtually all renal diseases (progressive but also acute). CKD reached worldwide pandemic proportions with up to 10% of the world population being affected. Patients with CKD show a high risk of mortality and morbidity with survival rates in end-stage kidney disease compared to many malignancies.

We focus on the underlying pathological processes of CKD, such as renal fibrosis or vascular pathology and also cardiovascular consequences of CKD. Progressive renal fibrosis leads to loss of function and the need for renal replacement therapy (dialyzes or renal transplantation). At the moment we still lack both, sensitive diagnostic options as well as effective treatment therapies – both areas representing the main focuses of our research.

Our group established a wide range of tools that allows us to comprehensively analyze pathological alterations in tissues. We consequently use a close translational approach, with a strong focus on clinical research whenever possible, and complement this with a wide array of in vitro and in vivo models.  We continually extend and develop our broad methodological “toolbox” including multiscale imaging, from electron microscopy, histopathology to 3D and non-invasive and molecular imaging, new in vitro methodologies. We also have broad expertise in modeling kidney diseases in vivo, among others using cell-specific transgenic approaches, lineage tracing and in vivo imaging, and broad outcome analyses. We also use a wide variety of molecular and biochemical methods.

A strong focus of our group is on the development of digital pathology, which is expected to transform pathology towards an innovative, reproducible, quantitative precision medicine field. We have established a comprehensive infrastructure allowing facilitated development of artificial intelligence (AI) and particularly machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) tools for preclinical as well as clinical histopathology (going beyond the kidney). A strong focus is on the development, testing, and validation of specifically tailored AI, and particularly DL algorithms for augmented diagnostics and data mining.

Finally, we have established and are leading the national Registry of COVID-19 Autopsies (DeRegCOVID), which facilitates (some aspects) of COVID-19 research and provide support and molecular testing of SARS-CoV-2 in pathology specimens.

Masterarbeit zur Erforschung des „D-Dopachrome Tautomerase like“ (DDTL) Proteins in der Nierenfibrose

Die Arbeitsgruppe von Prof. Boor (Nephropathologie) im Institut für Pathologie an der Uniklinik Aachen sucht ab dem 01.02.2023 eine(n) motivierte(n) Masteranden/-in.

Wir forschen bereits seit langem an dem Zytokin „Macrophage migration inhibitory factor“ (MIF) sowie seinem homolog „D-Dopachrome Tautomerase“ (DDT) im Zusammenhang mit Nierenfibrose.

Das erst kürzlich entdeckte DDTL ist noch weitestgehend unerforscht, was durch Dich und diese Masterarbeit geändert werden soll. Durch folgende Methoden kann dies ermöglicht werden: Zellkultur, Western-Blot, RT PCR, Immunfluoreszenz sowie Immunhistochemie-Färbungen und Molekularbiologischer Methoden.

Renal Molecular Pathologist Network (REMAP) is the first official European Renal Molecular Pathology training course realized by the cooperation of 6 different European Universities and a company specialized in e-learning and content management. It is funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union.

REMAP aims at training new professionals who will be able to provide renal biopsy services, molecular diagnostics as well as outstanding nephropathologic support: the renal molecular pathologist. “We are delighted to have been successful in Erasmus+ and we are getting to the heart of the project activities”, said the project coordinator Prof. Loreto Gesualdo.“ The students from all Europe will benefit from the project since the lessons will be released in open educational resources at the end of the project.”

REMAP involves six academic partners namely Università degli Studi di Bari Aldo Moro (IT),University of Cyprus (CY), Uniklinik RWTH Aachen (D), Academic Medical Centre of University of Amsterdam (NL), Charles University in Prague (CZ) and the Instituto de Investigacion Sanitaria de la Fundacion Jimenez Diaz (ES) with specialized expertise in nephrology, telepathology or molecular diagnosis, that will be supported by an ICT company (GRIFO Multimedia -IT) specialized in e-learning to develop an innovative multidisciplinary training course.

In the next three years, REMAP project will train twelve young European students from six different countries who will interact to each other, benefiting of this highly specialized course. The students will have the chance to put in practice their knowledge in the best clinical centres in Europe in order to gain also dynamic and interdisciplinary work experience. The result of the project will see the students returning with new skills and highly professional qualifications.

The local coordinators are Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. Jürgen Floege from the Medical Clinic II (Nephrology) and Ass.-Prof. Dr. med. Peter Boor, Ph.D. from the Institute of Pathology.
