Contactless Monitoring

How can we improve the treatment and regular monitoring of geriatric patients in the hospital or at home? The goal is to close the spatial or tem-poral gap between health care professionals and patients using innovative IT and telecommu-nication technologies. For instance, a contact-less monitoring of physiological signals can pro-vide more comfort and seamless monitoring of patients. One of our research topics addresses the contactless recording of vital parameters. Here we use multi-spectral camera-based tech-nologies (PPG imaging, infrared thermography) as well as multi-modal sensors integrated into personal garment or gears. All parameters are subsequently collected and analyzed for association with specific geriatric symptoms such as cardiovascular or cardiopulmonary frailty. Thus, this research project embraces the development of complex software (e.g. image and signal processing, algorithm development) as well as the hardware solutions (e.g. measurement technolo-gy and sensor development). The anticipated technology will avoid a direct contact or wire based connection between body attached electrodes and instruments and thereby increase the comfort and the freedom of movement for geriatric patients. The developed procedure will be tested directly in the clinical environment soon.
