A strong sense of community and shared purpose permeated the Dreiländereck last Saturday as around 60 participants came together for the GLOBAL WALK AGAINST PAIN. Bringing together people living with chronic pain, their relatives, researchers, members of the Scientific Center for Neuropathic Pain Aachen SCNAACHEN, RWTH Aachen University students along with their families and friends, as well as representatives from Grünenthal and MUMC+ Maastricht, the event demonstrated the power of collective action in support of a shared cause.
Together, participants took steps to raise awareness of chronic pain, a condition that affects approximately one in five people worldwide. Despite its prevalence, chronic pain often remains invisible, and its profound impact on individuals, families, and society is frequently underestimated. To promote awareness and education, QR codes displayed along the walking route linked participants to pain factsheets published by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) offering insights into the realities of living with chronic pain (https://www.iasp-pain.org/resources/fact-sheets/).
Held at the Dreiländereck, the event demonstrated how a seemingly small action can create meaningful change. Collectively, participants covered an impressive 334 kilometers, showing their solidarity with millions of people affected by chronic pain around the world.
The Aachen walk was part of a larger international initiative. More than 20 centers across seven countries participated in this year's GLOBAL WALK AGAINST PAIN. Global results are being collected, and attention is now turning to an exciting question: Will we reach the global goal of walking 2,000 km worldwide?
