Lab Alumni

Kemal completed his bachelor's degree in the field of molecular and applied biotechnology at Bielefeld University, and is currently pursuing his master's in molecular and applied biotechnology at the RWTH Aachen. During his bachelor thesis entitled "Application and Optimization of genome editing in C. glutamicum" he gained experience in molecular biology methodologies. More recently in the Lab of Professor Ulrich Schwaneberg (RWTH) he undertook a research project focusing on the functionalization of cellulose with antimicrobial peptides, as well as a project focusing on the synthesis of Poly-LacNac in one pot reaction within the lab of Professor Lothar Elling. Kemal joined the Selkrig lab in February 2023.

Tarik is a biotechnology student at the Fachhochschule Aachen. He joined the Selkrig lab in June 2022 for a practical semester and is currently pursuing his Bachelor thesis. His research focuses on investigating the role of SteC-mediated phosphorylation of target host proteins during Salmonella infection and its impact on the pathogenesis of Salmonella. The project is carried out in close collaboration with Jörg Vervoorts-Weber (Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University Hospital Aachen).

David completed his Biology bachelor’s degree at RWTH Aachen University, specializing in microbiology and genetics. He pursued his bachelor’s thesis with the BioVT group and gained experience as a student assistant at LenioBio, as well as through a research internship with Prof. Blank in the iAMB group. For his master’s, David spent two Erasmus semesters at La Rochelle Université and completed a research internship with Prof. Hornef at University Hospital Aachen. In October 2024, he joined the Selkrig Lab to pursue his master’s thesis, focusing on protein transport mechanisms across the Bacteroides outer membrane and their internalization into host cells.
