Theme: Calcium-sensing receptor in the kidney-periodontium crosstalk in CKD: impact on periodontal remodelling

 

Description

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients suffer from hypocalcaemia, mineral-bone disorder and periodontal remodelling. Changes in calcium concentrations are detected by the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) in the parathyroid glands, but CaSR is also expressed in other tissues involved in calcium homeostasis, like kidney and periodontium. Until now, a deep study of CaSR in the periodontium that explains the remodelling observed in CKD patients has not been performed. In the present project I aim to understand the progression of tooth loss in CKD, by investigating the role of CaSR in the periodontium to find potential treatments against periodontal remodelling in CKD patients.

Your tasks:

  • Performing in vitro experiments with renal and/or dental cells to mimic CKD condition
  • RT-PCR, western blot from cells and tissues
  • Performing μCT-scans of mice jaw
  • Evaluation of the in vivo and in vitro results

What we are looking for:

We are looking for a reliable, motivated and enthusiastic biology/biotechnology student and/or medical (dental) doctor student interested in completing his/her master/medical thesis in our group. Experience in the lab and cell culture would be recommended, but not mandatory.
