Kaiyi Zhang, PhD, from the Hornef group published her work on non-professional efferocytosis of Salmonella infected intestinal epithelial cells by neighboring enterocytes in the Journal of Experimental Medicine. Whereas infected intestinal epithelial cells in the adult intestine are exfoliated into the gut lumen, this mechanism may contribute to the antibacterial host response of the neonatal host.
