Herrenhäuser Conference on the subject:
The neonatal "window of opportunity", early priming for life

Organization: Prof. Harald Renz (Gießen/Marburg), Prof. Mathias Hornef (Aachen)

Funded by the Volkswagen Foundation Hannover

Environmental factors, nutritional constituents and the contact with microbial constituents influence many biological processes such as the maturation of the mucosal immune system and the establishment of a stable host-microbial homeostasis. New epidemiological and experimental studies identify a time window after birth and during early infancy that is of critical importance for the maturation of the immune system and the establishment of a stable host-microbial interaction. Failure of adaptive processes during this time cannot be compensated for during later life and may contribute to the pathogenesis of a number of highly prevalent immunological and inflammatory human diseases. These new insights underline the particular importance of exogenous influences during early postnatal development and might fundamentally change our understanding of the pathogenesis of immunologial, metabolic and inflammatory diseases such as asthma, allergies, obesity, diabetes and cronic inflammatory bowel disease and help to identify new strategies for the prevention and clinical managment.
