Research

Dear researchers and scientists:

The Department of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics at the University Hospital RWTH Aachen is one of the leading psychiatric research institutions in Germany. Our science movie provides an overview of our major research fields.

Our areas of teaching and research are:

Section:
Neuropsychology

Division:
Computational Neuroscience
Experimental Neuropsychiatry
Experimental Psychopathology
Experimental Behaviour Psychobiology
Functionality of Cortical Circuits
Social and Affective Neuroscience

Structure of Cortical Functional Units
Translational Brain Medicine in Psychiatry and Neurology

The Department of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics is – next to the IRTG 1328 “Schizophrenia and Autism”, which was funded from 2006 to 2016 by the DFG - also home to the International Research Training Group " The Neuroscience of Modulating Aggression and Impulsivity in Psychopathology” (IRTG 2150). Psychologists, psychiatrists, computer scientists, physicists and PhD students from other fields use brain imaging techniques (MRI, fMRI, PET, MEG, Brain Mapping) to learn more about the neurobiological mechanisms of pathological aggression and impulsiveness and the influence of several factors such as gender, environment and personality.

The Department of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics works closely with Forschungszentrum Jülich. Within the framework of the Jülich Aachen Research Alliance (JARA), JARA-BRAIN  is one of six divisions. Further, the department provides all three heads of department (Schneider, Habel, Diesmann) for the „JARA-BRAIN Institute: Structure Function Relationship“. The aim is to harness technical and methodological expertise and apply basic and clinical research to identify new strategies for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders of the brain.

Yours sincerely,
The research team
