JARA-BRAIN

Brain research of international standing

JARA-BRAIN is the only brain research partnership between a university and a large non-university research institution in Germany. Scientists and researchers from over 20 clinics and institutes at RWTH Aachen and from five institutes at the Forschungszentrum Jülich have joined forces in JARA-BRAIN to work on improving the diagnosis and treatment of mental und neurological disorders such as schizophrenia, autism, depression, Parkinson's disease and dementia. Their work covers the entire range from basic research in neurobiology to imaging techniques and the development of new methods of treatment in clinical settings.

As one of six divisions of the Jülich Aachen Research Alliance (JARA), JARA-BRAIN was established in August 2007 to consolidate and intensify cooperation between RWTH Aachen and the Helmholtz Association's large-scale research institution in Jülich in a variety of fields. With approximately 3,800 employees and an annual budget of €350 million, the research alliance provides unique conditions for research and teaching. JARA includes five divisions in addition to JARA-BRAIN: JARA ENERGY, JARA-SOFT, JARA-HPC (High Performance Computing) JARA-FIT with a focus on information technology and JARA-FAME (Forces and Matter Experiments). In addition, the professors of the department (Habel, Diesmann) are directors of the “JARA-BRAIN Institute: Brain Structure-Function Relationship”, which is shared institute of both, RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich.
