Experimental Neuropsychiatry

Head of Molecular and Clinical Psychopharmacology

The working group analyses the biological foundations of healthy human behavior and the pathological deviations from the norm associated with in psychiatric disorders. The team investigates the dynamic processes in the brain using functional imaging techniques, in particular positron emission tomography (PET), which allows them to quantify molecular structures in nanomolar concentrations. The group's research therefore concentrates on understanding molecular pathophysiology in mental disorders and the effects of psychotropic substances. A particular focus is the clinical testing of new drugs.

The division's work is closely linked with that done by the medical faculty in the clinical neurosciences. An important partner at University Hospital Aachen is the Department of Nuclear Medicine headed by Prof. Felix Motthagy. In addition to working with other neuroscience research groups at RWTH Aachen, the group collaborates with Forschungszentrum Jülich in the JARA-BRAIN alliance.
