The new Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 1739 is the focus of the latest issue of the magazine acforscht. In the lead article, the two spokespersons — Univ.-Prof. Dr. med. dent. Michael Wolf Director of the Clinic for Orthodontics, and Univ.-Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Joachim Jankowski, Director of the Institute for Molecular Cardiovascular Research, both at Uniklinik RWTH Aachen —outline the scientific vision of the new research consortium.
In the interview, both interviewees make it clear that periodontal degeneration is far more than just a localized disease of the oral cavity. SFB 1739 Soft Tissue- Alveolar Bone Crosstalk focuses precisely on the interface between the tissue that anchors our teeth in the jaw and various systemic diseases.
The goal of this interdisciplinary consortium is to gain new insights into the development and impact of periodontal diseases on the entire organism and to translate these findings into long-term treatment strategies for patients.
