Three dissertations from the Institute of Neurophysiology awarded the Borchers Medal 

During the graduation ceremony of the RWTH Aachen University on June 12, 2026, three graduates from the Institute of Neurophysiology were honored with the Borchers Medal. This award recognizes outstanding doctoral achievements and is awarded to graduates who have completed their dissertations with the highest grade, summa cum laude. It is one of the highest honors for doctoral degrees at the RWTH Aachen University.   

Among the 2025 recipients are three researchers from the Institute of Neurophysiology:  

  • Dr. med. Björn Heinrichs was honored for his medical dissertation titled “Contribution of the voltage-gated sodium channels Nav1.7 and Nav1.8 to the pathophysiology of pain and autism.”  
  • Dr. med. Aylin Bilge Kesdoğan received the Borchers Plaque for her work “Analgesic effect of botulinum toxin in neuropathic pain is sodium channel independent.”  
  • Dr. rer. nat. Vishal Sudha Bhagavath Eswaran was honored for his dissertation “Nav-igating voltage-gated sodium channels: structure, biophysics, and modulation.”  

The Institute of Neurophysiology extends its warmest congratulations to all three awardees on this special honor and is delighted that their outstanding scientific achievements have been recognized.
